Not religious nuts

Because our load was oversize out of Baltimore, Rosie and I had to take a special route through the Allegheny mountains in Pennsylvania.

The route took us west on US 30 over Laurel Mountain.

Let us jump in the time machine and go back to 1970 when we (my family) wanted to join the local swimming pool.

Any one person could join the Wheelersburg Swim Club. Any family could join at a reduced rate. To qualify to join, you just needed a small amount of money for the yearly dues and you must agree to the rules set forth by the management. Each year, there was always a waiting list for new applicants and sometimes, those new applicants would have to wait until the following year to join.

The pool and its membership were open to all nationalities, races, creeds, colors, heritages and religions. The property had a fence around it which served to keep intruders out, unauthorized visitors out, protect the wondering from just falling into the pool, stop people from coming and going as they please and to add some type of order in keeping track of who comes and who goes.

The entrance had a welcome sign where a nice lady sat and checked your membership card as you came in. She also looked to see if you brought any glass bottles or breakables with you that could harm others if they got broken.

There were two types of people that went to the pool; those who were members (citizens) and those who were guest of members (had a visa).

If you were on the pool property, inside the fenced in compound and you were not a member or a member’s guest, you were escorted out. You were deemed illegal. You had no legal right to be there. You were not given a day pass, you were not given the right to swim in the pool, you were not given special privileges and you were not given a driver’s license. You were taken to the gate and expelled.

If you were tossed (deported) off the compound, it did not mean they hated you, your family or your beans and rice. It simply meant that you were there against the rules and you were not to come back until legal status was gained, just like every other citizen… I mean member.

Without the protocol, without the fences and without the vetting of documents as members entered the grounds, the swimming pool’s government would have collapsed and membership would have meant absolutely nothing to anyone.

Why have a law and not enforce it?  What part of illegal is not understood by our government?  We are a land of law and we should start acting like it.
