Evacuation Is Not The Option
Posted by: | Comments
I saw this happen time and time again when I lived in Miami. The authorities would give the warnings and scream to evacuate. The highways would clog with traffic, people run out of gas on the road, accidents everywhere and then the storm would go south or north, missing Miami completely. The next warning, they did nothing.
People in Galveston fell into the same trap. Many times in recent history, they were told to get out, rush to safety or face death. When the storm never hits, the next time they do not heed the warnings.
When hurricane Andrew did destroy most of south Florida, we packed our bags and moved. My wife went to Colorado and I went back to Georgia. Nobody had to tell us that we didn’t want to go through that again.
More responsibility needs to be placed on people who live in these areas. Any gulf coast city is in danger of flooding, storms, hurricanes and disaster. If you have a problem with storms, flooding and such, don’t move there.
Take the responsibility of making that choice to live in a dangerous place. You should not depend on the government to come get you. You should not count on the police to save you. You should not look for a welcome wagon to come by and feed you. If you leave before the storm, great. If you stay, you are on your own. If you don’t want to be bothered by evacuations, storms and death, do not move into these places to begin with.
My dad told me, "The deer with the biggest set of antlers is the hardest to find because he doesn’t just walk out in front of you." In other words, the deer doesn’t go where the hunter goes. He seeks those places that are safe.
Let’s all move to New Mexico and have big antlers.
Florida Retired Squirrel

In Florida, most do not realize that all creatures, both big and small, come to the tropics to retire.
The proof is in the pudding (so to speak).
A Day At The Beach?
Posted by: | Comments
Yes, I spent the better part of Wednesday at the beach. I went to Miami Beach and sank my toes in the sand. What a wonderful feeling.
Yes, it is true, but not as glamorous as it sounds.
I went and picked up a load of concrete forms from a new condo construction site that happened to be right on the Miami beach and just one hundred yards from the ocean.
I was instructed to come in around the rear
(beach side) of the site so the crane could reach over the fence and load my truck. This picture is looking north with the hotels and condo’s are on the left. The ocean is right there on the right.
It took a good two hours to get my truck loaded. It was some bulky stuff with lots of small parts that had to be secured. It was hot too. I came to a quick realization that I am in very bad shape. One of the reasons for going back to flat bedding was to get back in shape. It’s either shape up or die trying… lol
I was distracted, over and over by onlookers. Why don’t these people put some clothes on? Don’t they know they can get sun burnt?
All in all, I had a great day. I felt like I had done something good. I feel better and the job will get easier as the days go by.
My new dispatcher is cool. He seems very easy to work with. I hope I can live up to his high standards and produce like I should. I’m a little slow you know.
Loaded, I am headed to Georgia.

I took the truck from the shop after a week long wait for the repairs to be completed. I made it fifty miles down the road and it starts doing the same thing it was originally doing a week ago; the reason it was in for repairs to begin with.
So here I sit, outside the same shop, waiting for repairs again. Looks like it will be a long weekend.
(Update 02-02-08): Yep, I am back in the motel for the weekend. Time to work on the new site. I need to create a ton of graphics and icons. I guess I will have lots of time.
Ya wanna watch the new site come together? Don’t pay any attention to the content yet. Most of it is generic until things are complete, so if ya want a peek…Click HERE… Remember, it is only 4 days old and a completely new concept in platforms for me. I’m learning as I go.
