Join The Club Obama!

obamaandwrightEditor’s Opinion by: Gilbert Purtee

Barack Obama’s letter of resignation (if that’s what you want to call it) from being a member of The Trinity United Church of Christ was leaked to the press (CNN) and thus, Obama felt compelled to hold a press conference during a campaign stop in South Dakota today.

The reason for his resignation, Obama says, is because the church and the people who have spoken there, have caused riffs in the continuity and purpose of his campaign.  Further more, his campaign has caused undue pain and heartache to other members of the Trinity Church Family.

Barack Obama also stated that he did not understand why his church and Jeremiah Write, his long time friend and Pastor had fallen under such scrutiny by the media and the public.  He said he was prepared for many things to be brought out about his past, his friends and such but the onslaught of the media towards him and his church affiliation had caught him by surprise.  He admitted that he would not “denounce” The Trinity United Church of Christ because the church was not in need of being denounced.

Oh, contraire, Mr. Obama.  Your church needs to be denounced.

Church’s preach and teach about God, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit.

Statements from the pulpit should be what the Bible teaches, what God teaches and/or what Jesus taught.  These things maybe open to interpretation, but are rarely considered controversial.

So why is his church and Obama’s Pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright considered so controversial and should be denounced?  The pulpit of any church should never be used for political speech.  It should never be used to teach hate, used to mock others (even if it was directed at Hillary) or degrade people who do not believe as you do.  It maters not if the congregation is white or black, Jew or gentile, man or woman, young or old;  hate toward others has no place in a worship service and when there is, it draws attention.  When these hateful views are taught over and over again, there is a great danger of losing the original charter of the church, that of which is to preach the Gospel and win souls to Christ.

A church without Christ is nothing more than a club.

A church that preaches hate is nothing more than a gang.

A church that believes blacks should not sing “God Bless America” but “God Damn America” is nothing more than a clique.

A church that teaches conspiracy, treachery and collusion is nothing more than a league of hatred.

This, Mr. Obama, is why your Pastor Write and his Trinity Church of God are suspect and why your record as a member of such an organization for more than 20 years raises the question, “Do you feel like singing, ‘God Damn America’?”

For those who came to the Trinity Church to hear God’s Word, just sat there and listened to the hate, cheered at the mocking and the damning of others and still did nothing, they too should be denounced.

If you, Mr. Obama, sat there and listened to it and did nothing, you should be denounced as well.

Whale of a Little Girl

Posted by: Gib@CBO | Comments (0)

whale A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.

The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.

The little girl said, ‘When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah’.

The teacher asked, ‘What if Jonah went to hell?’

The little girl replied, ‘Then you can ask him’.

A Day At Highland Park BC

Posted by: Gib@CBO | Comments (5)

Mar 09 2008 Chatt 014s

For more than 70 years (four generations), there has been at least one member from my family on the church roll at Highland Park Baptist Church at any given time.

By: Gilbert Purtee

I am spending some time at my little sister’s house near Chattanooga, TN.

Connie is the Headmaster of the Tennessee Temple Academy and we all attend the Highland Park Baptist Church in scenic, downtown Chattanooga.

I had the camera out and took some shots.

First, we had a wonderful Sunday School class with coffee and donuts.  Yes, I love donuts.

HPBC3-9-8G Jason was our teacher for the class.  He is a young preacher boy in the seminary school at TTU.

The regular teacher was absent this morning and Jason jumped right into the position.

He said he would throw something together.  Well let me tell you, his ’spur-of-the-moment’ lesson was better than any teaching you get out of a regular Sunday School book.  I was truly blessed to be in his class.

A short walk from the Sunday School class took us into the old auditorium of the HPBC.  The newest auditorium is being restored, renovated and updated, so services are being held in the old auditorium.  This is the same building I sat in chapel back in 1978 when I was here in school.

HPBC3-9-8Ea My nephew Mark, leads the singing at HPBC.  His beautiful wife Sarah has a wonderful voice too and sings along side of him.  I think they call it the ‘Praise Team’ as there is one other lady singing along with them.

Mark is an accomplished musician, multi talented asset to the church, a father of two and an IT specialist for a prominent hospital in Chattanooga.

Mar 09 2008 Chatt 013a Sarah is a true gift to our family.  Not only is she a wonderful mother and wife, she plays the flute in two or three orchestras (I can’t keep up with all of them), she teaches music and the flute, sings like an angel and if she had wings, you would think she was an angel too.

Dr Bouler has been at HPBC for a long, long time.  Every time I hear him preach, I think he get’s better and better.  Mar 09 2008 Chatt 022A man who has a true burden for souls, Dr. Bouler has dedicated his life to HPBC and Tennessee Temple University.

Mar 09 2008 Chatt 023I didn’t get the best picture of Dr. Bouler, I admit.  He is very animated and I don’t think I had the shutter speed slow enough.

If you were there Sunday morning, you would have seen my sweet sister up in the choir.

HPBC3-9-8F For more than 60 years, I know of my mother, my father, my sister Gyl and her husband, my sister Joy and her husband, my sister Connie (her hubby does not sing, bless his heart… lol) and myself have all been members of the Highland Park Baptist Church Choir.

I remember watching the choir sing when I was just five or six years old.  I wanted to play the trombone just like Homer Brittan  who played in the orchestra.  The church now has a massive orchestra with a full woodwind, brass, strings and percussion sections (I love the kettle drums myself).

I hope to get more pictures as the week progresses.  I will be in Texas on March 17th to start my new job.

Practice Before You Preach

Posted by: Gib@CBO | Comments (1)

bible_13 A young preacher confided in an older and wiser pastor that he was having trouble keeping his congregation awake.  He explained how it gets real hot on those summer, Sunday mornings and people tend to nod off.

The old preacher chuckled and said, "When I see people start to fall asleep, I just slip this line into my sermon. Last night, I held in my arms, the wife of another man.   When they all sit up to hear the rest, I say, and that woman was my dear, sweet mother."

The next hot, Sunday morning, the young preacher saw some eyes getting heavy and thought he would try the advice he was given.

Sure enough, he got everyone’s attention by proclaiming in a strong voice, "Last night, I had the wife of another man in my arms."

Then the young preacher paused, looked towards heaven for help  and said, "But I can’t remember who she was."

Big Cross North of Haines City Florida

Posted by: Gib@CBO | Comments (2)

bigcrossIn my travels around the State of Florida, I have seen many wonderful things.  One site that I have always admired was this giant cross behind a church on US 27 just north of Haines City, Florida.

I stopped on the side of the road and took this picture (click on picture to enlarge).  I walked down the road and noticed that this is not just a 150 foot high cross.  This cross is in reality a cell phone tower.  Around the base of this monster cross is a small building and a fence that surrounds it.  It is all located on the property just behind the church.  You can see the roof of the church in the foreground of my photograph.  How cool is that?!?!
