Baltimore Tuesday Load
ByAt the Port of Baltimore.
About these pictures and the land I am on today… it was once known as the…
Baltimore Municipal Airport-Harbor Field
This field, intended as a combination sea/land facility, was started in 1929. Due to problems with the dredged fill, only the seaplane part was ready by 1932. The famed Yankee Clippers began operating from here in 1938, but left for a bigger customer base in New York the very next year. The land base was finally ready in 1940 & the National Guard built a hanger there. The Baltimore Municipal was complete & dedicated in 1941, but the War Dept. took control of the field in 1942 & it became known as Baltimore AAF. Civilian control returned in 1946 & the field operated well until about 1950, when the jet-age demanded longer runways. Parts of the field were also still settling into the fill. The Guard & private interests continued using the field through the 1950’s, until it was sold & redeveloped into a marine terminal in 1958. All flying activities were halted on DEC. 31st, 1960 & little remains of the airfield except about 1/2 dozen original buildings.
I arrived around 09:30 this morning to load. I am not fond of Ports and Terminals. They are notorious for being rude, non-helpful and just a pain. They put me in line to load, took me out, moved me left, moved me right, backed me up, put me in line again and at 14:00, I’m still no closer to being loaded than when I first arrived.
It is part of trucking, so you take the bad with the good.
To compound the problems, I would happen to be here when the temperature reached a record high. The thermometer on the truck said 104. It is hot!
After we got Rosie loaded, we put the tape on the load and it measured too high to be legal. We got to wait until Wednesday morning for the permits to move. So, we are here in Baltimore for the night.

Hurry up and wait, eh? I see nothing much has changed with trucking since I last rode with my nephew in 2000.
It’s cooled off a bit here. Only 84 for a high today, and it’s 70 right now at 9:41 pm. Really humid but much more tolerable than 97 and humid, which was our high yesterday.
Good luck getting loaded and blowing that joint in the morning.
Drive safely, you and Rosie.
Mushy stuff,
Diane
