I watched a TV special on CNN about a year ago and they were interviewing the late Dr. Jerry Falwell. There were few people in America as shrewd politically as Dr. Falwell. He had a gift for seeing things as they are and knowing how to “ride the wave” toward the future.

The interviewer asked him about the upcoming presidential race and he said this election is about national security. He said, ‘for now we need to lay aside the social issues and elect a strong defense-minded president that will protect the American people against a ruthless enemy.’

Today, the conservatives in America are without a clear conservative candidate. The dems would run from war and Al Quada would LOVE to see us tucking tail and pulling out of the conflict.

However, the GOP will evidently nominate John McCain this spring.
He is not strongly conservative in many ways. He has compromised the party on various issues while serving as a senator. If elected he will be the first senator elected president since John Kennedy. (The same is true if either of the democratic candidates is elected.) But, McCain is strong on national security (though weak on the border issue) and he is pro-war when it comes to defending America. He is behind what is going on now in Iraq. Again, he has not always been behind Bush, and the real conservatives in the GOP, but I believe he will maintain our posture in this global conflict with the Muslim world.

By the way, Daniel [Butch's son] graduated from Liberty University in 2006. The commencement speaker was none other than John McCain. Do you think Dr. Falwell saw something no one else could imagine?
